Off-the-shelf never quite fits the wall you've got.
There's a dead corner you've never worked out how to use. A door that drops and won't catch the latch. Skirting that got bashed up in a reno and still doesn't match. Shelves you don't trust to hold a row of books.
It's all small, so it never makes the top of the list. And it's the kind of fiddly work most blokes won't bother quoting because there's no big ticket in it.
This is the part of the trade I actually like. The bit that turns a near-enough job into one that looks built-in.

- Built-in storage, wardrobes and shelving made to fit the actual space, not a standard sizing
- Floating shelves anchored into stud or solid fixing on load-rated brackets, so they carry weight instead of tearing out of the plasterboard
- Non-loadbearing internal walls, framed, sheeted and trimmed, to split a room
- Doors re-hung so they sit square and latch first go, sticking and dropping sorted
- Skirting and architrave matched to the existing profile so a repair blends instead of reading as a patch
- Flat-pack wardrobes and units assembled, scribed to the wall and fitted dead level
- Loadbearing changes flagged up front: those need an engineer's drawing before I touch them

Solid timber
When you want the grain on show. Benchtops, open shelving, a servery top. Costs more, looks the part.
MDF / paint finish
Cheaper and more stable for anything getting painted. The sensible pick for built-ins and trim.
Flat-pack fit-out
Bought a wardrobe or unit flat? I'll assemble it, scribe it to the wall and fit it level so it doesn't look flat-pack.

Questions I get asked about carpentry & joinery
- Can you build a wall to split a room?
- Yes. A non-loadbearing internal wall, framed and sheeted with the skirting to match, is routine work. If the change touches anything holding the roof or floor up, that's loadbearing and it needs an engineer's drawing first. I'll flag that on the quote rather than guess at it.
- Will floating shelves actually hold weight?
- If they're fixed right, yes. I anchor into the stud or a solid fixing with load-rated brackets, never straight into bare plasterboard. That's the whole difference between a shelf that carries a row of books and one that pulls a chunk of wall out with it.
- Can you match my existing skirting and architraves?
- Yes. I match the profile so the repair or extension blends in instead of standing out as a patch. If the old profile's been discontinued, I'll show you the closest match on the quote before I cut anything.
- How long does it take?
- Most built-ins, re-hangs and trim jobs are a day or two on site once the materials are in. Custom joinery depends on how long the timber takes to come in, and I'll confirm that on the quote.
- What does it cost?
- The quote's free and fixed before I start. It comes down to solid timber or MDF, custom-made or flat-pack, the size, and how many built-ins, walls or doors there are. If a change turns out to be loadbearing, the engineer's drawing is a separate cost and I'll tell you that early.
