A bad patch shows itself the moment the light goes low.
There's a doorknob hole behind a door, or a dent from moving a couch. A crack that keeps creeping back at the cornice no matter how many times it gets filled. A brown ring on the ceiling from a leak that's long since fixed.
Someone has a go with a tube of filler. It looks fine the day they do it. Then the afternoon sun rakes across the wall and there's the patch, a flat bump where the wall used to be smooth.
The reason is simple, and it's why I don't rush this. Get that right and you genuinely can't find where it was.

Questions I get asked about plasterboard & wall repairs
- Why does a patch show through later when it looked fine on the day?
- Because the set coat has to dry all the way before it's painted. Paint it while it's still going off and the patch shrinks back a fraction as it cures, and that flat spot jumps out the first time low sun hits the wall. I let it dry properly between coats, which is why it takes a few visits and not one.
- Why does the same crack keep coming back?
- A crack that returns at the same cornice or corner is usually the building moving, not a bad fill. Re-setting it just hides it until it opens again. I'll tell you on the quote whether yours is a straight re-set or movement worth sorting first, so you're not paying me to patch the same line twice.
- How long until I can paint it?
- Two or three short visits over about a week. It's not the work that's slow, it's the drying. The set coat has to cure fully before it's paint-ready, and rushing that is exactly what gives you a patch you can see later.
- Will you do just one small hole?
- Happily. One doorknob hole or a single dent is a real job to me, not too small to bother with. Same fixed price either way, right up to re-sheeting a whole wall or ceiling.
- What does it cost?
- The quote's free and fixed before I start. It comes down to the size of the repair, a small hole versus a full sheet, whether it's a wall or a ceiling and how high, and the board the spot needs. If a crack turns out to be movement, I'll tell you that's a different job before you spend money on a patch.
